An Exciting New Era - Screenings in Europe, and VIMEO STREAMING

It’s an exciting new time for WE ARE ZAMA ZAMA. After the film’s gradual entry into the world at film festivals during the pandemic, a new wave of special screenings and audience talk-backs with the director has begun.

In June, the film was screened at the Scala arthouse cinema in Lüneburg, Germany, as part of the opening festivities for the new Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture and Society (LIAS) at Leuphana University.

Upcoming screenings will be held in Geneva, in conjunction with the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy and the Graduate Institute (November 13) and in Venice, at the Giorgione Cinema, co-hosted by Universita Ca’ Foscari New Institute for Environmental Humanities (NICHE) and McGill University’s Critical Media Lab (November 23).

On February 1st, 2024, WE ARE ZAMA ZAMA will show at the MARKK (Hamburg’s Museum am Rothenbaum for Kulturne und Künste der Welt/Museum for World Culture and Art).

We’re also thrilled to announce that the film is now available for streaming on Vimeo. You can access the full director’s cut at the link here, or via the button on the homepage of this website. At 74 minutes, this is the full and original version of the film with English subtitles, and is not the dipped and dubbed 52 minute edit currently hosted on BBC Africa.

February Updates

2022 has kicked off with great excitement for WE ARE ZAMA ZAMA and we have some wonderful news to share.

WE ARE ZAMA ZAMA was a favorite at the New York African Diaspora Film Festival and was programmed as part of the 'Best of the Fest' screenings in January. The documentary film has also been invited as an Official Selection for the Taiwan International Documentary Festival (TIDF) which runs May 6-15.

Earlier this month, The Daily Maverick hosted a private screening and webinar discussion with WE ARE ZAMA ZAMA director, Rosalind Morris alongside journalist, Richard Poplak. The event permitted a broad South African audience to engage with the film and partake in a riveting Q&A with the two hosts. The recorded conversation can be accessed here and a praising article about the event, here.

Finally, ‘The Zama Zama Project’ will be presented in-person at the 2022 Berlinale Film Festival Expanded Forum. The project was originally invited to the festival in 2021 but due to COVID-19 restrictions, was not physically displayed. Rosalind Morris will be traveling to Berlin this month to promote the films and participate in the festival events.
